The wave looks much more even before compression, none of the nasty Logitech peaks.Īny ideas to make it sound better gladly received. Positive: No hissssing s, no background noise, input volume is slightly higher with the Samson on current setting (and could be yanked further up, whereas the Logitech was maxed out).

I obviously held the mic too close to my mouth as the breathing was picked up and the Bs are slightly popping. It has more body than the headset but it's not nearly as crisp. Results: Negative: I find the sound very muffled. I then recorded, and ran dynamic compression with my usual set-up (I'm using Kara's settings) and a 2dB post gain. I had to turn up the volume slider to 31dB before I got any decent sound input. Then I installed the latest version of Samson Soft Pre. I boosted the input volume in audio system prefs to about 75%. I checked the mic was set in Audio Midi, system audio and Sound Studio as input device. I plugged in the mic, recorded - result: tiny blibs as sound waves.

For software I use Sound Studio on a Power Book laptop.įirst try: I went into the bedroom, where I'd recorded the poem with the Logitech, too. It arrived today, and I recorded a poem I'd recently recorded on my USB headset, to compare. New set-up: Finally I found a fairly cheap source for Samson mics. Having listened to the last community podcast, I thought I'd go for the Samson Q1U: lighter, no directional problems, cheaper, and better suited to female voices. I thought it sounded good but as I record in different locations and mostly without a table, I found it cumbersome to hold the very heavy mic still, and didn't like how the shifting of direction influenced the recording. In my latest Logitech headset I also suddenly have background noise, which becomes so pronounced during the dynamic compression/slight amplification I do at the end of editing that I need to run noise-cleaning, too. In the last couple ones, I had the clicks everyone is complaining about, as well as the hisssing s peaks. I thought more info might be better.īackground: Over the last couple of years, I've recorded with a succession of USB headsets, mostly Logitech, with varying results.
